Gorillaz - Humanz Review

Listening to Humanz over these past few weeks have been a complete whirlwind of emotions. Much like everyone the initial listen of the album was horrific. The album felt completely random, messy and unnecessarily filled to the brim with features. Before the album was released we got some singles that I really enjoyed, Ascension, Andromeda, Saturnz Barz and We Got The Power, I could tell from these tracks pretty quickly that Gorillaz had taken a more modern route to the tracks they were writing, which has been expected by them as they seem to grow with the climate of hip-hop. The difference here was that, even with writing and artwork, they seemed to be a complete lack of character that we purposely look for in Gorillaz albums. Hardly anyone knows anything about any type of story for the album cycle like we have before, the tracks didn't help with this. It felt like Albarn as 2D was hardly on the album, that's why the track Busted and Blue quickly became a favourite by most fans, devoid of anyone else but Albarn it gave us an actual Gorillaz song.

Although I say all this, I don't hate this album, I always like to give albums a week, give it a couple of listens so initial reactions don't cloud my judgement, it's an easy way for me to actually find the bad albums, and although initially disappointing and still their worst album, Humanz is not bad. It has its moments (pun intended) and I've started to really enjoy some of these songs, the best parts of each are Damon and the layering of ideas can become something beautiful things like at the end of Charger or Andromeda. If you get past some of the worst tracks you can really dig up some soon to be classics by Gorillaz. It is still their worst album but it isn't bad.

Here are some tracks I think are worth listening to from the album:

Ascension
Strobelite
Saturnz Barz
Submission
Charger
Andromeda
Busted and Blue
Let Me Out
We Got The Power

Deluxe Edition Tracks:
The Apprentice
